****BACKGROUND****
International Medical Corps, a global humanitarian nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs, seeks candidates for the position of ****Surgical Nurse****in Chad.
Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps is a private, voluntary, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization. Its mission is to improve the quality of life through health interventions and related activities that build local capacity in underserved communities worldwide. By offering training and health care to local populations and medical assistance to people at highest risk, and with the flexibility to respond rapidly to emergency situations, International Medical Corps rehabilitates devastated health care systems and helps bring them back to self-reliance.
International Medical Corps started activities in the Lac Region of Chad in 2012, implementing a nutrition program in the district of Bol. In 2014 a new strategy was taken to include the provision of health, food security and continued nutrition services for host populations and conflict-affected returnees/refugees in response to the increased population displacement following Boko Haram assaults in neighboring Nigeria and Niger.
International Medical Corps with the support of ECHO is implementing a program which provides response to the affected population through lifesaving health and nutrition care and secondary health care including surgical operations. As part of the implementing team, a nurse with surgical competency is required at the Bol Regional Hospital to assist the surgical team to provide emergency care to causalities mainly linked with Boko Haram attacks. His/her additional role will be to build capacity for staff of the surgical ward and the intensive care unit.
****JOB SUMMARY****
He/she is responsible for the quality of care in the theatre, surgery ward and for making follows up on post-operative care and follow ups. He/she is under technical supervision of the Medical Director to whom he/she directly reports.
****ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES****
Medical Oversight at Bol Regional Hospital
- Perform various anesthetic procedures including local, regional , spinal and general anaesthetics
- Assist the surgeon to perform routine and elective surgical interventions including pediatric, obstetrical, orthopaedics, chest, digestive surgery and urological among others.
- Provide post-operative care as directed by the surgeon
- Asses local capacity of doctors and health care teams and conduct trainings as needed
- Implement standard unaesthetic and resuscitation procedures
- Ensure rational usage of drugs and consumables in the surgical ward
- Ensures needed anesthetics are available through regular monitoring and timely ordering
- Ensures hygiene and safety precautions are observed in the surgical wards and emergency unit according to MOH and WHO standards.
- Ensure proper records are kept for all patients who undergo anesthesia and resuscitation
- Compile weekly, monthly and quarterly activity reports and submit relevant information to the Surgeon or to the Field Coordinator
- Prepare presentations on the surgical interventions performed by the supported hospital on the benefit of donors, partners and the IMC coordination body
- Organizes and manage activities of the emergency room
- Perform any other related duties that may be assigned by line manager
Representation
- Attend health coordination meetings as well as other coordination meetings which are relevant to country programs as required by the Field Coordinator
- Ensure maximum visibility of the agency at the Regional Hospital
- Provide support to the Field Coordinator for the production of field reports required by the coordination
- Contribute to the creation of a positive image and overall credibility of the organization, notably through the application of the organizations Code of Conduct, ethics, values and stand-point with regard to internal and external actors
Human Resources Management
- Coordinator any breach of IMC rules.
- Ensure compliance to local labor laws including working hours
- Maintain open lines of communications with all field staff

****QUALIFICATIONS****

- Nursing degree with anesthetic competency
- Minimum of three years of experience required, of which 1 to 2 years should be of developing country experience or resource deprived environment
- Previous NGO experience
- Must have excellent communications skills, both oral and written
- Must have excellent self-motivation skills
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently
- Extremely flexible, and have the ability to cope with stressful situations and frustrations
- Ability to relate to and motivate staff effectively
- Creativity and the ability to work with limited resources
- Excellent decision making skills
- Must work independently under difficult conditions
- Must be able to take on non-medical responsibilities from time to time to cover for other team members
- Skills and knowledge in program sustainability and capacity building, public-private partnerships and project monitoring and evaluation (both quantitative and qualitative methods)
- Strong writing and presentation skills;
- Proven capabilities in leadership required
- Strong negotiation, interpersonal and organization skills
- Fluency in French required.
- Ability to read, write, analyze and interpret technical and non-technical information in English.

While performing duties of the job, the employee frequently works in precarious and remote places. The employee is usually employed in areas of civil strife, which often result in an unstable security environment. Regularly work in outdoor extreme weather conditions.
